Professor of Magical Studies is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s a rare opportunity to experience a magical education from the other side of the desk. If you know the world of academia at all, you’ll appreciate it as a clever satire, but even if you don’t, it’s a great story with a unique magical system. It’s your first year as a professor at your own alma mater, and you’re still getting to know your new colleagues and associates - or reconnect with old ones - when you find yourself obliged to put in a little overtime saving the world.

In Atlantis Academy, you’re an orphaned sea nymph with some natural magical talent and a water dragon companion. One stormy day, a strange figure invites you to come to Atlantis to hone your abilities, and before long you find yourself in a new world, attending classes and making friends. Needless to say, preparing for tests and avoiding bullies soon takes a backseat to saving the world.

Paranormal Preparatory School is sadly underrated. It’s less focused on the actual school experience than some of the others - you’ve barely arrived on campus before you’re called upon to save the world - but the premise of being the only normal human at a school for supernaturals is a fun one that allows the author to get into issues of privilege and bigotry without getting overly preachy. It’s fun working together with fellow students - making at least temporary peace between warring cliques and species - to figure out exactly what’s going on.
