Author's Note
My name is Stefanie Handshaw, and "The Volunteer Firefighter" was my first experience writing/scripting in ChoiceScript code, which was an adventure in itself! In addition to writing, I am also into photography, hiking, cats, crochet, and many other varied interests. In 2009, I co-created and administered a successful online text-based multiplayer storytelling adventure known as "Redemption" that ran for several years with a devoted player base.
Also of note, I have lived in three different countries, US, Japan, and Belgium, and try to use my experiences living abroad to add depth to my creative writing. I love learning and have formally studied many topics including world religion, Asian studies, French, Japanese, social work, webmaster skills, and psychological first aid.
While I am not a volunteer firefighter, I do know quite a few of them, including my dear husband, Darran, who helped to ensure that my technical explanations were as accurate as possible and supported me throughout this entire process. The cover graphics and icon are courtesy of the very talented Pauline Holman. I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Becky Slitt who encouraged me to do this from the very beginning (and answered innumerable questions very patiently) as well as my small flock of devoted playtesters. Without all of you, this project would not have been possible.
Last but far from least, I would like to thank all volunteer firefighters and emergency responders. You go above and beyond to help your fellow human beings in their moments of greatest need, and for that may we always be grateful.
